Chapter 1: Page 7: Line 18

"With Indians in it, and Frenchmen," adds Pliny, whose least gesture sends Cookie-crumbs ev'rywhere.

Line 18 Vulgarized:
"Perhaps, my dear Uncle, a story about the French and Indian War, begun in 1754, if you would be so kind," suggests Pliny as he Cookie Monstered cookies all over the back room.

Subtext:
Pliny fucking loves cookies and action films.
How many American stories by 1786 didn't have Indians and Frenchmen in them? I suppose if they're stories from the West Coast, they'd be full of Indians and Spaniards. But I think my theory that Pliny just loves action films stands because if the story doesn't have Indians and it doesn't have Frenchmen then that just leaves the British and how boring are they?! Aside from the story of the Revolution, which Pliny probably has heard enough of, it being the backdrop for his entire life so far, any story starring the British is probably like an Aaron Sorkin television show. And who wants to hear an episode of that related orally to them over coffee and cookies? Oh, I guess older people might. That sounds like a nice evening. But what kid would want that?!
